Resources

Students can start now and get an early start on their career in IT:

Volunteering

Community organizations can always use a hand. Charities, schools, hospitals, childcare centres or nursing homes are great places for students to offer their IT skills. Check out www.youthvolunteer.ca for some great opportunities.

Internships/Co-ops

School guidance counsellors or Computer Studies teachers are great resources to see what on-the-job experience options are available.

Summer Camp

Summer camps are a great way to explore skills and have fun. Search for a camp that is suited to your child’s interest or try one of the following programs:

Online Tutorials

Students can take time to learn from resources at home – especially free ones. Here are a few to get started:

Job Shadowing

Students who already have an idea of the IT career they want can learn more about it by finding someone who’s already doing it and seeing what the work is really like.

Interview an IT worker

Still trying to decide? Students can prepare a list of top questions and call up a professional for an information interview.

Networking

Networking works, even at the high school level. By telling everyone they know about their interests and career goals, students open themselves to opportunity that come up.

Part-time Work

Trying out a prospective career can be especially great, especially when making some extra cash at the same time. Even though students may not be doing the exact same work, they’ll be able to get a feel for what it’s like and whether it’s truly for them.
